Get Involved! Clubs, Teams, and Activities at Compass this Year!

Compass has a variety of clubs and teams planned for the coming year! Some are open only to Compass students, and some are open to others in the homeschool community. Follow links below for more information and to sign up.

Starting this Week:

Checkmate Champs Chess Club

Students are invited to gather for supervised chess play. Players are expected to know the rules of the game or be enrolled in a class. There is no formal chess instruction during club meetings. Club members will learn about local tournaments and may chose to register and play as a team.

Cryptids Club

Fans of “cryptozoology” meet to discuss and debate mythical (or real?) creatures sich as Big Foot, Yeti, Loch Ness Monster, chupacabra, and others. Club members will examine reports and news stories to consider the possibility of these popular creatures.

Filmmaking Club

LEarn about all aspects of filmmaking including vision, script-writing, casting, acting, filming, lighting, and editing with the goal of making short takes and short films individually or in groups.

NOVA 4H Nature Club

The NoVA 4-H Nature Club has monthly club meetings, virtual presentations, monthly hikes, nature outings, and service projects around ecosystem, birds & mirgration, weather, plants, etc. The club offers youth leadership opportunities for elected student-officers.

Teen Social Committee

Teens ages 14+ are invited to serve on a committee to plan the Fall Teen Party, Winter Snow Ball, and spring Prom. Committee members will work with an advisor to plan details such as theme, food, decor, music, venue, and activities for teen parties.

Astronomy Club

The Astronomy Club consists of space enthusiasts who discuss current events and discoveries in the field of astronomy and work on the Pulsar Search Collaboratory project. Members must be age 13.

First LEGO League Robotics- Explore Level

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a guided, robotics competition that encourages teamwork, discovery, innovation, and problem-solving. Fall semester, the group will work through a complete project from a prior year to learn how to build and code the robots and think through the engineering design process. Spring semester, the team will prepare a challenge with the goal of participating in a local showcase.

RunFit Kidz Running Club

RunFit Kidz is a fun, non-competitive co-ed program for mixed age students of all fitness levels to introduce a passion for fitness and running in a supportive environment. The program helps emerging runners build incremental endurance over 8 weeks, and the group’s accomplishments are celebrated with a 5K (3 mile) celebration fun run/walk.

  • Meets for 8 weeks on Wednesdays starting September 25

Alpha Chapter, Homeschool National Honor Society

Alpha Rho is a student-led organization promoting scholarship, academic excellence, networking, and service projects. 8th graders must be taking a high school level course to apply. All students must submit a test score in the 90th+ percentile with application.

Civil Air Patrol

The William P Knight Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol meets at Compass. Youth members (“Cadets”) focus on aerospace and cyberspace education, character development, leadership, physical fitness, and community service.

Compass Collaborative Newspaper Staff

Student newspaper staff learn about journalism and create a quarterly newspaper consisting of Compass news, creative writing, short stories, poetry, teacher interviews, reviews (movie, video, book, or toys), puzzles, riddles, jokes, photos, artwork, or comics. Guest writers/contributors welcome.

Crafty Kids Club

Kids socialize and make themed crafts using a wide cariety of materials and techniques.

First LEGO League Robotics- Challenge Level (Middle School)

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a guided, robotics competition that encourages teamwork, discovery, innovation, and problem-solving. The competition is comprised of the Robot Game, an Innovation Project, and Core Values. FLL team members engage in brainstorming, research, design, and coding while practicing the engineering design process of building, testing, re-building, re-testing, etc. Experience through Compass’s Robotics Training Team, Robot Fab Lab, or equivalent preferred.

Friday Adventure Series: Role Playing Game (RPG)

Teens gather weekly for a virtual role-playing adventure based on one-shot (i.e. one-day) “shorts.” From epic fantasy to futuristic sci-fi escapades, experience a different genre and setting each week. This game system uses simplified rule system which is a great intro to D&D.

Homeschool String Ensemble

Homeschooled violin, viola, cello, or bass musicians at an advanced beginner to intermediate level play with others in an ensemble.

Magical Creatures Quest

This enchanting club is for middle school students who adore whimsical tales, creative adventures, and the magic of tabletop role-playing games. Tweens will connect and form friendships with other middle schoolers who share a love of magical stories and imaginative play- in person!

Metro DC Homeschool Concert Band

Enjoy the camaraderie and cooperation of making music with others in a school band! This concert band is for beginner and advanced beginner musicians of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.

  • 4th-8th grade

Mock Trial Team

Teens with strong skills in public speaking, debate, or acting, or interested in law portray witnesses and attorneys in a mock murder case. Interest meeting and auditions for the team are held in May.

  • Wednesdays online from 5:00 pm- 7:00 pm and Fridays in person from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm, weekly

Technovation Team for Girls

Girls work with women mentors and learn to code. Then, working in pairs or teams, identify a problem in their community and develop a mobile app to address the problem for this nationwide competition.

Middle School Social Club

Middle school-aged kids (12-14) will meet twice a month for social activities with one meet-up each month at Compass for games/snacks, one meet-up at a nearby destination/venue such as mini golf, fall festivals, trampoline park, and other special/seasonal events.

  • For grades 6-8 (ages 12-14)
  • Additional dates: September 11, 25, October 9, 23, November 6, 20, December 4
  • Some activities will have nominal supply or admission fees.

Teen Jam Night

Teens ages 13+ may bring their instruments to play songs together and socialize over an interest in music. Bring own instruments (no amps/speakers allowed).

TGIF Teen Game Night

Teens ages 13+ play board games, card games and enjoy social time
